Do Won Chang, From Janitor To Forever 21 Billionaire
Do Won Chang – They say all you need to do to make it big is to dream big and work on them.
That is what he just did years ago!
Do Won Chang is an immigrant from Myeong-Dong, South Korea.
He grew up working in coffee shops and ended up with his own coffee delivery service.
He and his wife moved to the United States in 1981, with one goal in mind – start a business!
He worked as a janitor, a gas station attendant and in a coffee shop when he first moved to the United States.
He had to work 3 jobs to make ends meet. One day, he found himself looking at the wealthy people around him.
He noticed they all worked in fashion.
Using whatever amount of money he had saved from his 3 jobs, he opened his first store in the Highland Park in Los Angeles.
The store was named Fashion 21 targeted to Korean-Americans. As the business took off, he changed the name to Forever 21.
Indeed, the name attracted and gained more customers.
Within 5 years, he had opened 11 stores, including one in his hometown back in South Korea.
Over time, Forever 21 has grown to over 600 stores in strategic locations around the world.
Despite its success, it remains to be a family owned business.
One of his two daughters work as the company’s marketing manager, while the other one heads up the merchandising.
His wife is still the buyer and reviews as much as 400 designs per day.
They also established the Fashion Delivers Charitable Foundation that donates a significant amount of money to churches and related groups, especially missionaries in third world countries.
The Forever 21 story gives hope to people with dreams and came to the United States with almost nothing.
The couple’s net worth is now an estimated $4 billion.
