Evan Almighty (2007)

Director:  Tom Shadyac
Rated:  PG
Run Time:  90 minutes
Age Recommendations:  All ages
Main Characters:  Evan, Joan, Dylan, Jordan, and Ryan Baxter, God, Congressman Long
Plot:  Evan Baxter gets elected to Congress and asks God to help him change the world.  God asks him to build an ark.  Whole family pitches in to help and so do the animals.  The dam bursts and the whole valley is flooded with only the ark to save all the skeptical people.  In the end, Evan does make a difference through acts of random kindness (ARK).
Theme:  We need to meet challenges together, side by side, and then we can change the world with simple acts of random kindness.
Good Points:

  1. The humor is great between Noah and the animals
  2. Explanation by God at the end of the film ties the who ARK concept together to mean more than meets the eye.
  3. Uplifting principles are portrayed throughout the movie.

Downfalls:

  1. The casual references to God were a little unsettling.
  2. The special effects during the flood weren’t top notch.
  3. The only “gross” factor was the part with all the bird droppings.

Buy/Rent/Skip:  Buy:  It is a good family film that the whole family can enjoy.  There aren’t any risqué parts and the humor is appropriate for everyone.  When God talks to Joan in the diner about not just giving what someone asks for, but rather giving them opportunities to learn and work through problems to attain what was asked for is a timeless lesson.  It is light-hearted and an excellent movie.
