Night at the Museum (2006)

Director:  Shawn Levy
Rated:  PG
Run Time:  108 minutes
Age Recommendations:  Everyone
Main Characters:  Larry Daley, Rebecca,
Cecil, Gus, Reginald, and Nick Daley
Plot:  After disappointing his son, Nick, for the last time, Larry accepts a night watchman job at the Museum of Natural History.  In his first nightshift, Larry realizes that everything at the museum comes to life at night.  Larry learns an ancient Egyptian stone brings the statues to life only during the night.  If they are outside the building by dawn, they turn to dust.  Proud that he finally has a steady job, he brings his son to the museum with him only to discover the stone has been stolen and they have to fight to restore everything to how it was.
Theme:  No matter how out-of-hand things get, don’t ever give up and when you have a job to do, do it well.
Good Points:

  1. The diorama characters really steal the show.
  2. The movie is filled with laughs.
  3. The special effects were believable.
  4. Even if you haven’t been a Ben Stiller fan in the past, in this movie he has a solid role with no vulgarity or crudeness; played very well.
  5. The humor was well-timed and enjoyable.
  6. The exhibits and story-line make you feel like a kid again and it makes you want to go to the museum and see for yourself.

Downfalls:

  1. The end started to drag.
  2. The scenes between the father and son were mundane.

Buy/Rent/Skip:  For anyone who wants a light movie with a bunch of laughs, buy this movie.  If you are nervous about a Ben Stiller movie (since most of his previous movies are “toilet humor”) rent it and see how much fun it is to feel like a kid again.
