The games-keeper named Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley to buy everything a witch or wizard might need, and gives him his ticket for the Hogwarts Express which leaves platform 9 3/4.

On the train, Harry befriends a red-haired boy named Ron.  During Halloween, a Troll enters the school grounds and traps a know-it-all witch, Hermione.  Harry and Ron save Hermione and they become an inseparable trio.  Harry and his friends have many adventures through-out their first year of school as they deal with classes, survive Professor Snape’s blatant torments, befriend Hagrids dragon, survive Draco Malfroy and his 2 buddies, and find out the truth about the sorcerer’s stone.

Theme:  Family is more important than riches or fame.  Good always overcomes evil.

Impressions:  J.K. Rowling has masterfully created a captivating page-turner. This first installment includes everything one could wish in a fantasy: interesting characters, strong tension between good and evil, plenty of mystery, dramatic twists-and-turns, and a bit of magic. This book is a must-read for kids and adults alike. It’s imaginative, clever, and a good read.  Any one of any age would benefit from reading this book.

Summary:
What did Harry Potter know about magic? He was stuck with the decidedly un-magical Dursleys, who hated him. He slept in a closet and ate their leftovers. But an owl messenger changes all that, with an invitation to attend the Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches, where it turns out Harry is already famous.. . . Full color.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Book Review

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Book Review

Author:  JK Rowling

Genre:  Fantasy

Point of View:  3rd Person

Pages:  341 pages

Age Recommendations:  8 and up

Main Characters:  Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Professor Lockhart, and Professor Dumbledore

Plot:  Harry Potter is stuck at the Dursley’s awaiting the start of his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  On his birthday he fears that it was all a dream and that he didn’t become friends with Ron and Hermione because he hasn’t received any correspondence from them.  That night, as he is supposed to be up in his room pretending he doesn’t exist, he is visited by a house elf named Dobby.  Dobby warns him not to return to Hogwarts.  Harry refuses claiming that Hogwarts is his home.  Dobby confesses that he stopped Harry’s mail and pulls out a large stack of letters.  Harry demands them back and Dobby runs downstairs and drops a dish of pudding on the Dursley’s guests.  Furious, Uncle Vernon locks Harry in his room.  One night, Fred, George, and Ron fly a car to rescue him, and Harry spends the rest of the summer at the Burrow with the Weasley’s.

As they race to catch the Hogwart’s Express, Ron and Harry cannot go through the barrier to platform 9 ¾ so they fly the car to school, crashing it into the whomping willow.  Snape greets them and takes him to his office, where they narrowly escape getting expelled.

After attending Nearly Headless Nick’s death-day party, Harry hears a voice and follows it to the second floor where they discover Mrs. Norris, Filch’s cat, has been petrified.  During a duel match with Draco Malfoy, Harry learns that he can speak Parseltongue, snake language.  Everyone thinks that Harry is Slytherin’s heir and that he is attacking the student body.  Ginny starts to act strange around Harry, and Harry feels that everyone is against him.  As more non-pure bloods are attacked the school governors’ call for Dumbledore’s release and Harry learns that attacks like this happened 50 years earlier.  Hagrid was accused and expelled back then, and he is arrested and sent to Azkaban now.  Hermione is attacked and Quidditch is canceled because a student was kidnapped and taken deep into the Chamber of Secrets, where the monster resides.  Once Ron and Harry realize that it was Ginny who taken into the Chamber, they scramble to save her.  They head to Professor Lockhart’s room to get him to help rescue Ginny. They find the Chamber of Secrets, with the help of Moaning Myrtle, and discover that is was Lord Voldemort aka Tom Marvolo Riddle who was responsible for the attacks 50 years ago and today.  Harry destroys Lord Voldemort’s essence in the form of his diary, slays the monster, and escapes the chamber with the help of Professor Dumbledore’s phoenix, Faukes.

Theme:  Evil may return, but good will always overcome.

Impressions:  The plot is better than the first book’s. The characters remain entertaining — there’s less world-creation, so more time can be dedicated to the main content of the story.  Just as with the first, it’s not a bad book. It doesn’t “feel” juvenile, at all — it has good characters and a well thought-out plotline.  More of Harry’s fears are explored — and answered — in this volume.  The rest of the old familiar faces are back, too, but though the spiraling new plot, there’s no development of characters. Even after a year, none of them have changed, except perhaps for Harry who grows more ponderous. Old characters have new antics, and new characters have new antics, but there’s no more depth to them than in “The Sorcerer’s Stone”.  A good sequel and it leaves the reader wanting more.
